Athlete burnout is a syndrome of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion resulting from prolonged stress and overtraining without adequate recovery. It is more than ordinary fatigue or a temporary rough patch — it's a persistent state that can drain the enjoyment from a sport and, ultimately, drive talented athletes to quit.
Researchers typically describe three components: emotional and physical exhaustion, a reduced sense of accomplishment (feeling that effort no longer produces results), and devaluation (growing cynicism or detachment from the sport). Burnout sits at the end of a continuum that often begins with simple overload and progresses if left unaddressed.
Warning signs include sustained drops in performance, persistent fatigue, irritability or withdrawal, loss of enjoyment, and more frequent injuries or illness. Because the signs are largely internal and athletes often hide them, burnout is easy to miss — which is why building visibility matters. FocusPoint includes an automated Burnout Risk indicator to help coaches spot it early; our coach's guide to burnout covers the signs and responses in depth.
